Gardaí are investigating the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the bodies of a woman and a newly born baby at a house in Co Tipperary this afternoon.

The bodies were discovered by a man who went to the house in an estate in Carrick-on-Suir at around lunchtime.

Gardaí and emergency services were alerted and are at the scene, which has been preserved pending the arrival of the state pathologist.

It is understood the woman may be the mother of the infant, who appears to have been newly born.

Detectives are keeping an open mind in the case and say they are following all lines of inquiry.

However it is understood that at this stage they are treating the case as a personal tragedy and handling it in "a sensitive manner".

Gardaí are establishing an incident room and will appoint a family liaison officer.

They are also seeking to contact relatives and will speak to neighbours and family members in connection with the investigation.
