Irish secretary of the National Union of Journalists Seamus Dooley has said a motion passed by the Dublin broadcasting sub-branch in relation to the pay of 'high earners' at RTÉ was in breach of union policy.
Last week the branch called for a cut in the money earned by the highest earners at the broadcaster, calling high fees and salaries "indefensible".
Seamus Dooley said although he himself was not at the meeting, he was contacted by members of the union afterwards.
He said union policy in relation to the future of RTÉ was confirmed at the Irish conference on 16 November and the issue of imposing pay cuts on the earnings of any member of the union was not raised during the debate.
Speaking to RTÉ News, Mr Dooley said the terms of the sub-branch motion was also in conflict with the union rule book because the NUJ is opposed to unilateral amending of contracts of employment.
In response, chairs of the Dublin Broadcasting Branch and sub-branch, Emma O'Kelly and Paul Murphy, said It is open to any member of the branch, who may be aggrieved by a branch decision, to propose a motion to rescind.
Notice of rescission - stating the terms - has to be circulated to members with a notice calling the meeting.
It would then be up to members to decide whether or not they wished to rescind a motion.
They added that they have received no such request from any member.
