A man has been shot and seriously injured in west Dublin this evening.

The man who is in his early 40s was shot in the stomach at around 5.20pm in the Blakestown area.

The victim is known to gardaí, and they believe the attack may be connected to an ongoing feud in west Dublin.

It is understood the victim was shot in the vicinity of the Lidl supermarket on Blakestown Way and following the shooting made his way inside the shop.

Customers in the store were contained inside the building while the victim was attended to by paramedics before being taken to hospital for treatment.

A significant forensic investigation is under way at the scene and the supermarket has been closed for the evening.

The gunman is believed to have made his escape in a dark coloured vehicle.

Gardaí say a car was found burnt out in the Millers Glen area of Swords and forensic tests are being carried out at that location.

Gardaí at Blanchardstown are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
