European map highlights Ireland's Covid-19 case rate

Ireland's incidence of Covid-19 cases per 100,000 people over the past 14 days is now 25.4, according to figures released by the European Centre for Disease Control (ECDC).

That is higher than Italy (10.7), Germany (17.9) and the UK (20.9).

Spain has the highest incidence rate in the EU/EEA and UK, at 138.7 per 100,000.

A map from the ECDC shows two regions in Ireland, as well as Northern Ireland, as having 20 to 59.9 cases per 100,000 people.

Its Mid-East region, which includes Kildare, has a rate of 60 to 119.9 – a rate that is among the highest in Europe.

On 7 August, the Government announced a tightening of restrictions in Kildare, Laois and Offaly following a spike in the number of cases there.

A meeting of the National Public Health Emergency Team is taking place today, to advise on whether those localised measures should be lifted.

On Tuesday, Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly warned that Ireland was at a tipping point and he said Ireland's rate of growth over the past two weeks was the fourth highest in Europe.

As of today, just shy of 2 million cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in the EU/EEA and UK. The same area has seen more than 180,000 Covid-related deaths.
