Pope Francis is to deliver a short address to pilgrims at the National Marian Shrine in Knock on the final Sunday of this month.
The announcement was made to journalists by event organisers in the Co Mayo town this afternoon.
Previous versions of the papal itinerary indicated that the pontiff would simply pray the Angelus in public during the hour-long western leg of the visit.
But a spokesperson for the organisers told RTÉ News that provision has been made for the release of a script containing the pope's words after the Angelus prayer.
It is customary for popes to comment on major world events following the weekly Sunday Angelus which is normally delivered in the Vatican.
Meanwhile, organisers of the Knock visit have warned the 45,000 people who get tickets that they face at the minimum a 3km walk both to and from the shrine if they travel by car.
This is the distance from the nearest designated car parks to the venue.
The shrine's Rector, Fr Richard Gibbons, said "the message is bus, bus, bus…."
He and the gardaí are encouraging pilgrims to use buses, private coaches and car pools adding that if they travel by train a shuttle bus will transfer them from Claremorris Station.
Fr Gibbons told this afternoon's media briefing that only ticket-holders would be admitted to the shrine and they should arrive as early as 4am or 5am and between 7:30am and 8am at the latest.
He added that everyone with tickets to Knock will see the Pope on the day but there will be no opportunity to see him at Ireland West Airport his point of arrival in and departure from Co Mayo.
Brenda Drumm of the World Meeting of Families 2018 said tickets for the Knock event will be sent by regular post from Monday 13 August and that only hard copies will be accepted at the shrine.
She said each one will show the area in the venue assigned to the ticket holder.
Garda Superintendent Tom Calvey said pilgrims should be prepared for a standing only event and possibly a significant walk if they come by car.
There will be a number of road closures including the closure of a 30km stretch of the N17 from midnight on Saturday.
He said priority will be given to buses and both Bus Éireann and Iarnród Éireann will be providing enhanced services for the event.
Details of the garda traffic management plan can be found on the garda website.
The Pope will be flown from Dublin into Ireland West Airport and will be driven directly to Knock Shrine where he is due to arrive at 9:45am and he will leave again an hour later.
When Pope Francis arrives he will be driven through the assembly in the pope mobile.
He will spend some time in silent prayer in the Apparition Chapel before delivering a short address and leading pilgrims in the Angelus prayer.
After the pope leaves the shrine there will be a con-celebrated open air mass.
