Planned strike action by SIPTU members employed at the Zenith Bantry Bay Terminal in County Cork, has been deferred in order to allow workers an opportunity to consider proposals put forward by the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC).

The strike was due to take place tomorrow as part of a dispute over redundancies at the company.

SIPTU has accused Zenith of laying off maintenance workers with long service while planning to employ contractors on an ongoing basis to do their work.

"Our members appreciate the efforts of the WRC in assisting the parties involved to formulate proposals that go a long way to addressing the concerns of our members and can protect their employment conditions," said SIPTU Sector Organiser, Willie Noone.

Zenith Energy said that there are 31 permanent employees at the Whiddy Island terminal and that it is implementing five redundancies as part of a restructuring process.
