The journalist, broadcaster and nature writer Michael Viney has died at the age of 90.
Born in the UK in 1933, Michael Viney moved to Ireland to work as a journalist, and worked for RTÉ as well as the Irish Times, for whom he wrote for over 60 years.
He initially covered social affairs, but later moved to Co Mayo and wrote about issues including sustainability and the environment.
Michael Viney was best known for his 'Another Life' column in the Irish Times and wrote the final instalment last February.
Environment Editor of the Irish Times, Kevin O'Sullivan described Michael Viney as 'an environmentalist of global standing', with an immense understanding of science and a remarkable ability to communicate with clarity.
Environment Minister Eamon Ryan described him as an 'inspiration' who combined science with love of place.
The Irish Wildlife Trust said his extensive writings consistently reminded us of our deep connection to nature in all its beauty, wonder and diversity.
