The Irish Times has taken down an opinion article from its online site, credited to Adriana Acosta Cortez, which claimed Irish women's use of fake tan was "cultural appropriation".

A number of online readers had questioned the veracity of the identity of the author with some suggesting her image was generated by Artificial Intelligence.

The article titled "Irish women's obsession with fake tan is problematic" was number 2 in the paper's most read online articles today.

It has now been taken down and a message has been posted on the page saying "the text of this article has been removed pending checks".
