Gardaí have identified a person of interest as part of their investigation into the death of Stefan Posschier in Co Westmeath.

The death of Mr Posschier, who was in his 60s, close to Kinnegad is believed to be suspicious.

Gardaí were called to a house at Rattin shortly after 6pm yesterday when a relative raised the alarm.

Mr Posschier, who had been living in the area for at least 20 years, was originally from Belgium.

He was well-known in the community and had family living locally. He was also known across the midlands as a tarot card reader and a fortune-teller.

A technical examination has been under way all day to try to piece together what happened.

Forensic evidence from inside and outside the house has been gathered.

Detectives are now trying to establish the deceased man's movements over the last few days and in particular yesterday.

Door-to-door inquiries will also form part of the garda investigation.

A post-mortem examination is under way at the Midlands Regional Hospital in Tullamore.

Gardaí are hoping the results of the examination will establish the exact cause of death and determine the course of the investigation.
