The late Irish poet Eavan Boland has been announced as posthumous winner of the 2020 Costa Poetry Award for her final collection, The Historians.

The judges described the book as "an extraordinary book of lyrical power that has some of the finest lines of poetry written this century".

The Historians now goes forward alongside the other four category award-winning books for the overall Costa Book of the Year to be announced on Tuesday 26 January.

The 75-year-old, who was one of the most prominent voices in Irish literature, died in May 2020.

In recent years, she divided her time between Ireland the US, and was Professor of English and director of the creative writing programme at Stanford University.
