The Authorised Irish Ticket Reseller, Pro 10 Sports Management, is demanding an immediate public apology from the organisers of the Rio Olympic Games for seizing its tickets.

Pro 10 Sports Management said the Irish man arrested in possession of the tickets was holding them for collection from its clients.

Kevin Mallon, an executive for sports hospitality company THG, was arrested last week with hundreds of tickets marked for the Olympic Council of Ireland.

THG does not have a permit to sell Irish Olympic tickets.

Mr Mallon has been in a Brazilian jail since his arrest as part of an investigation by police into ticket sales.

Pro 10 Sports Management said it emailed the Rio organisers on Wednesday, within hours of being contacted by them for an explanation.

In the email, seen by RTÉ news, Pro 10 said: "At no time did we authorise Mr Mallon to sell any tickets on our behalf nor to the best of our knowledge did he sell any tickets. He merely acted as a collection point for individuals transacting directly with ourselves."

Pro 10 said Ireland is a small business community and the company knew Mr Mallon was going to Rio to look after THG clients so Pro 10 asked him to bring its unsold tickets over to Rio.

The email continued: "THG sports introduced us to some individuals who required tickets for the games. We understand they also introduced individuals in other territories to the local ATRs as well."

Pro 10 said the seizure of the tickets has caused major commercial loss and clients who travelled to Rio have been left without tickets.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Sport has said he is determined to establish the facts of the Olympic ticket controversy in order to decide and assess what type of inquiry should take place.

Shane Ross is due to arrive in Rio tomorrow night and plans to meet the President of the Olympic Council of Ireland Pat Hickey as soon as he gets there.

Speaking this afternoon he said there is a very big question mark over the Olympic Council of Ireland's inquiry.

He said it is absolutely vital that an independent investigation takes place and not an internal one.

The minister said there are serious tensions between him and the OCI saying "we've had several spats already".
