A group of around 30 activists have imported unauthorised abortion pills on a train from Belfast to Dublin.

Socialist TD Ruth Coppinger said they brought back the pills to highlight Ireland's continued ban on abortion and to call for a repeal of the eighth amendment of the Constitution.

The pills were ordered online and delivered to addresses in Northern Ireland, from where they were collected today.

Around ten of the women took the pills and said they were completely safe.

The pills are not widely available in Ireland and are only prescribed in limited medical cases.

The Pro-Life Campaign derided the action as a publicity stunt.

It said it was about garnering publicity and did not have a genuine regard for women's health and well-being.
