Senior gardaí are looking at ways to introduce Segways for members of the force on duty in Dublin City Centre.
The self-balancing transporters have been used by police forces in major cities around the world for a number of years.
They are also used for easy movement in universities, shopping centres and large airport terminals.
The move by gardaí followed a meeting this week of the Dublin Joint Policing Committee.
The Dublin City Business Association has agreed to part-fund the Segways.
