Independent Senator Rónán Mullen has written to the Chairperson of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications to request an investigation into the defamation of Fr Kevin Reynolds by RTÉ.
Speaking on RTÉ's News at One, Senator Mullen said that a wider group of people than the Director General and representatives of the RTÉ Board and Broadcasting Authority should come before the Committee.
RTÉ has said it was its policy to attend the Oireachtas Committee when requested and it would give all possible assistance.
Professor John Horgan will carry out an independent review of the editorial steps in RTÉ Television Current Affairs.
Elsewhere, Fianna Fáil deputy leader Éamon Ó Cuív has called on RTÉ to publish the amount of compensation paid to Fr Reynolds.
However, in a statement, Kevin Dawson, Head of Corporate Communications, said: "RTÉ is bound by a confidentiality agreement concerning the settlement that was agreed to be paid in Fr Kevin Reynolds' case, at the request of his legal representatives, and will not breach this agreement."
