RTÉ Chairman Tom Savage has said the broadcaster faces renewed uncertainties as it faces substantial impacts on its public funding.
The broadcaster's annual report for 2010 was published today.
Tom Savage said that 2010 saw RTÉ undertake managed cost reduction to address a rapid decline in commercial revenues.
This saw a substantial reduction in its 2009 projected revenue shortfall from €68m to €16.5m, and a further improved outcome in 2010 with a net deficit of €4.7m.
Mr Savage described this as a remarkable turnaround.
However, he also noted that the December 2010 budget together with changes introduced in the Broadcasting Act have added a further burden of approximately €20m per year on RTÉ.
These include a change to how TG4 is funded and a monetary ceiling on the 'free TV licence fee' scheme.
Mr Savage said the public funding base of RTÉ's operations has been put sharply in focus and he said that despite considerable organisational discipline in difficult times, the broadcaster faces renewed uncertainties.
