Curtailments on some routes are constantly changing

1235 Galway City Council wish to advise the public that there is continuing disruption to the water supply along with low water pressure in the west side of the city due to exceptionally high demand on supply from Clifton Hill Reservoir.

Water Service crews are working to restore sufficient pressure for the water supply. The public's co-operation in conserving water use (including not allowing taps to run continuously) would also greatly assist in allowing water levels to return to normal.

Galway City Council Crews are also currently working on repairing leaks in various parts of the city.

The public is asked to notify City Council on 091 536 400 of the location of major leaks which they may encounter.

1233 Edinburgh Airport is closed until 6pm, a further update is due at 4pm.

The City Council said it would like to apologise if bus routes are affected and some stops are not operating, adding that its priority is keeping main routes open and ensuring safety at all times.

Regarding water supply, there have been more than ten bursts in recent days and the council says building up increased storage in reservoirs must be assisted by people using water sparingly.

It has asked the public to be patient, as those requiring hospital admission are likely to spend a significant period on a trolley pending admission to a bed.

1219 The Road Safety Authority has issued a new warning to drivers to remain vigilant on the roads as the snow and ice begins to thaw this week.

Noel Brett, Chief Executive Officer of the RSA, said 'There is a danger that road users and particularly motorists may be lulled into a false sense of security as the conditions improve. As well as the obvious danger from lingering patches of snow and ice in sheltered areas, the roads during the thaw will pose an additional set of challenges to road users.'

1210 EnterpriseTrain reports that the 0935 Dublin to Belfast is now delayed by 75 minutes due to a train fault.

1209 The runway at City of Derry Airport has been closed due to heavy snow.

1148 Main roads across the Midlands are starting to clear but gardaí are urging motorists to drive with caution and to be aware of black ice.

1121 More details on Dublin Bus weather disruption.

1117 Edinburgh Airport is closed until 2pm. They will issue a further update at 12pm.

1109 A further update on the situation in Cork and Kerry:

In Kerry, the local authority is appealing to people to turn off their taps with water consumption in the county up 20% in the past week.

A spokesman said that people running water in an effort to stop their pipes freezing is placing a huge pressure on the supply.

If this demand continues they will be forced to place restrictions on supplies, possibly shutting down the system in places overnight.

The county's salt supplies are said to be sufficient for 2-3 more nights. Contact has been made with the NRA to source more.

In Cork, temperatures currently range from -7 on the coast at Timoleague to -3 in Cork city centre.

Gardaí in Cork city say early morning traffic was heavier than in recent days but travelling much more slowly as motorists heed the warnings to slow down.

Gardaí in Youghal, Bantry, Macroom, Bandon and Clonakilty all report that main roads are fine but secondary routes remain treacherous.

Road conditions in the north of the county around Kanturk are described as fine; however the M8 at Mitchelstown is closed following an accident.

Local gardaí say it should reopen shortly.

1057 Here's the latest weather forecast from Met Éireann:

Freezing fog will be slow to clear in parts today, with frosty icy conditions persisting. Outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow affecting Ulster and Connacht this morning and afternoon, with fresh snow accumulations, will gradually extend southeastwards later to affect most areas. Some significant accumulations likely across Ulster in particular. Best of the dry bright weather across the southern half of the country in the short term, with a clearance to scattered wintry showers in the west later this evening. Another bitterly cold day, with afternoon maxima of just -2 to +2 degrees generally, a little higher though along Atlantic seaboards. Winds will be mainly light southwesterly.

Further wintry outbreaks of sleet and snow this evening and tonight, mainly affecting Ulster, Leinster and east Munster, with yet more snow accumulating. There will be little or no wind, so freezing fog will form again in many places. Lowest temperatures -2 to -9 degrees, with widespread ice on untreated surfaces.

Outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow tomorrow, mainly affecting the eastern half of the country to begin, and later across the southern half of the country. Fresh snowfall especially further inland. Frosty icy conditions too. Still extremely cold, with highest temperatures just -1 to +3 degrees generally. Wind will be mainly light northeasterly.

1055 The northbound carriageway of the M8 motorway, near Mitchelstown, between Kilworth, Junction 13, & Kilbehenny, Junction 12 is now closed due to freezing fog/ice.

It is now being treated and is expected to reopen before 11am.

1050 An update from RTÉ South-East Correspondent Damien Tiernan:

Roads in many parts of the southeast remain treacherous.

Sheet ice and black ice is a major problem in parts of Wicklow, Wexford and Carlow, with some housing estates in Kilkenny and east Waterford like skating rinks.

At 11.30am, temperatures were still as low as -6C in parts of south Wicklow.

Salting took place overnight on the M9 Motorway between Junction 4 Prumpelstown and Junction 7 Paulstown and both lanes are clear and open to traffic north and south bound.

Care is recommended however as there are patches of black ice particularly on the overtaking lane.

The N80 from Carlow to Bunclody, and the N81 from Rathvilly through Tullow to Closh Cross junction have both been salted and are passable.

The R448 formerly N9 from the motorway junction at Prumpelstown through Carlow to the county boundary with Kilkenny at Wells has also been salted and is passable.

There are patches of black ice on these roads and Carlow County Council advises motorists to drive with care on these roads.

There is still packed ice on many of the regional roads however these roads are passable but extreme caution is warranted.

Today the council's primary effort will be to remove the packed ice where it still lies on regional roads.

Salt supplies are adequate for treatment of the motorway and national roads and Carlow County Council is working in close co-operation with the NRA to ensure the priority 1 routes are kept open to traffic at all times.

1035 A few reports of heavy snow in my beloved Donegal. If you have to drive in it, some tips here!

1033 Another update from North-West Correspondent Eileen Magnier:

It is starting to snow in Donegal where gardaí are renewing warnings to travel with great care.

Donegal County Council say all main roads were treated this morning with limited resources and were passable with care. However black ice continues to be a problem in a many areas.

The back of Errigal road, which had been closed for safety reasons at the weekend, has been reopened but drivers are still being asked to avoid it.

In Sligo town part of the Connaughton Road car park remains closed for safety reasons but conditions in the town centre are not too bad in general.

All main roads have been treated but again the problem is with subzero conditions refreezing the routes leading to the danger of black ice.

1031 Railusers on Twitter: 9:35 Connolly Belfast 45 minutes late

1029 RTÉ's Teresa Mannion on the situation in Galway/Mayo:

A spokesperson for Galway City Council is appealing to householders to conserve water supplies as dozens of houses around the Claremount area of the city remain without water since yesterday.

Crews are out fixing four serious water leaks in other parts of the city. Roads are around the city and county contunue to be gritted this morning.

Gardai in Galway say road conditions remain dangerous with black ice and freezing fog affecting many parts of the city and county.

Temperatures were as low as -3C overnight. In the city, extreme caution is advised on the Monivea and Headford Roads.

There is still some fog and icy patches on the M6 between Ballinasloe & Athlone.

Conditions are improving on the the N17 but in Mayo black ice remains on the Claremorris-Kilkelly Road. The N5 is still dangerous with roads around Westport, Swinford and Knock described as treacherous.

Galway and Knock airports are operating flights as normal and most Bus Eireann services in the West are on schedule with some delays and diversions in affected areas.

1026 An update on the weather in the Mid-West from RTÉ's Joan O'Sullivan: Freezing fog and black ice is making driving conditions hazardous for motorists in Limerick and Clare this morning.

Gardaí in Nenagh say that the M7 motorway is now completely reopened around Birdhill following a four car collision there around 6am this morning.

There were no serious injuries as a result of the incident.

Gardaí say there have been several minor traffic collisions in both Limerick and Clare and are urging motorists to take extreme care.

A small number of Limerick city bus services have been curtailed, due to difficulties climbing inclines in the affected areas.

However, overall bus routes in the midwest are operating normally though some are experiencing delays.

Rail routes are operating normally and Shannon airport says its schedule has been unaffected by the cold weather.

1000 Morning Ireland's take on the weather.

0955 An Post say that letters are being delivered to local delivery offices. Delivery is proving difficult on secondary and minor roads, however the backlog shouldn't take long to clear once road conditions improve.

I saw a postman pushing his bike when I was en route to work at 5.30. He looked even more miserable than I felt!

We've been getting lots of kind words in the comments section, but the people who really deserve praise are those who are out traipsing through the snow and ice every day to clear the roads and make deliveries for the rest of us.

0952 AA Roadwatch updates: Slow along the N20 Cork/Limerick Rd between Mallow & Cork, where conditions are icy.

M7 Limerick/Nenagh Rd northbound is down to 1 lane due due to a crashed truck and 5 cars, south of J27 Birdhill.

0933 Aircoach report that all services are operating, but ask passengers to allow extra time.

0904 Update from Midlands Correspondent Ciaran Mullooly: Dozens of school bus routes have been withdrawn this morning in the midlands as dense fog and icy roads made conditions dangerous.

The worst affected areas are in Westmeath and Kildare where local authorities have been trying to treat surfaces but compacted ice is still causing severe difficulty.

Gardaí have warned motorists that only one lane of the M4 and M6 is open in either direction and conditions on that lane are very poor too.

0852 Another AA Roadwatch update: Truck broken down on the M3 south of J6 Dunshaughlin. Heavy fog in the area so it is very hard to see. Dense fog and black ice along the M7 from J10 Naas South to J7 Kill, with delays as a result.

0822 There is a severe weather warning in place in Northern Ireland. Motorists are advised that sleet and rain followed by up to 10cm of snow will affect many areas in the North by late this afternoon.

Some flights at the Belfast International Airport and the George Best Belfast City Airport have also been delayed due to the weather conditions.

0715 BBC report that many sprouts may not survive the big freeze. If it keeps them off my plate at least some good will have come from all this...

0710 Update from Southern Editor Paschal Sheehy:

With overnight temperatures as low as minus six in places, icy roads continue to be a problem across Cork and Kerry.

There have been no reports of accidents, although gardaí are continuing to warn motorists to take care and to stick to main roads if they have to make journeys. Worst affected areas include Bantry and Clonakilty in west Cork, and Kanturk, Macroom and Mallow.

0656 Update from RTÉ North-West Correspondent Eileen Magnier:

Gardaí in the northwest say roads are again treacherous in the region due to black frost.

Despite council crews from Sligo, Donegal and Leitrim treating all main roads since the early hours of the morning, freezing conditions continue to make them hazardous.

In Leitrim freezing fog is causing problems and as in the other counties roads are refreezing after being treated.

People are again being warned in Sligo town that hilly areas are very dangerous.

Some schools in the region will be closed today due to the dangers posed by the ice and the inability of some school buses to run.

0652 Freudian slip? Comment from Sue: Love your typo "0625 The wintry conditions have affected bloody supply" Yes, they have affected bloody supply of EVERYTHING, not just blood.

0633 Bus Éireann on Twitter: Main commuter services in east and north east are operating this am with some delays and diversions.

0630 Dublin Airport is fully operational today. With freezing fog and temperatures as low as -5C on the airfield, snow and ice clearing teams have been spraying the runway, taxiways and apron areas throughout the night.

Passengers are advised to consult with their airline's website BEFORE coming to the airport.

Disruption to flight schedules may occur should weather conditions deteriorate further.

0625 The wintry conditions have affected blood supply.

People that wish to donate blood over the coming weeks should log onto www.giveblood.ie

0620 Here's the latest weather forecast from Met Éireann. I'm afraid it's not too pretty.

Freezing fog will be slow to clear this morning and ice will persist in many places also. Outbreaks of rain and sleet arriving in Ulster and Connacht will move southeastwards during the day, turning to snow as it does so. Later, there will be a clearance to wintry showers in the north and west. Highest temperatures -1 to +3C

Tonight, outbreaks of sleet and snow will become confined to Leinster and Munster but will mostly die out later. Elsewhere will be dry apart from isolated wintry showers in coastal counties of the north and west. There will be little or no wind, so freezing fog will form again in many places. Lowest temperatures -2 to -7C, with widespread ice on untreated surfaces.

Any snow flurries in the south and southeast will soon die out on Tuesday morning; isolated wintry showers will persist in coastal counties of the north and northwest but otherwise, it will be dry with broken cloud. Ice and freezing fog will largely clear as moderate, northeast to north breezes develop by afternoon. Still very cold however; highest temperatures just -1 to +4C.

0615 Dublin Bus update: Full bus service this morning but due to the adverse weather conditions there are still curtailments and diversions on some routes. A full list of the routes affected is available on www.dublinbus.ie or on www.transport.ie.
