Today, flooding disrupted travel in many areas.

ESB and Eircom crews are working to restore services to homes following adverse weather conditions yesterday.

The ESB hopes to restore electricity supplies to 1,000 homes in the Clifden Town and Cleggan areas of Co Galway by later today, after lines were damaged by high winds yesterday.

Eircom engineers are also working to repair phone lines damaged by the bad weather across the country.

It said it is getting 1,500 fault reports a day, in recent days.

The Bray New Year's Day charity sea swim organised by Bray Lions Club has been postponed until Saturday because of a forecast of extreme sea conditions.

It is the first time in 27 years the event has been postponed.

The National Roads Authority has meanwhile expressed concern that supplies of rock salt road grit are running very low in some areas.

An NRA spokesperson said it is in contact with local authorities who are responsible for all road gritting to assess the situation.

The NRA is particularly concerned about the situation in counties Roscommon, Galway, Clare, Mayo and Sligo.

A shipment of 8,000 tonnes of rock salt is due in Limerick on Wednesday. Until the shipment arrives, the NRA said local authorities will have to work together to try and keep roads gritted.

Wicklow's Mountain Rescue Teams say they have responded to 11 incidents of drivers stranded on icy roads in the mountains in the past ten days.

Rescuers said that despite continuous warnings from gardaí, drivers were still attempting to drive the Military road, which links Dublin to Wicklow through the Sally Gap junction.

They said they had to come to the assistance of two cars again last night.

Wet conditions are leading to heavy surface water and flooding in some parts, particularly in Co Cork.

Gardaí are advising motorists to avoid Skibbereen, where several roads are closed because of flooding.

The Conor Pass near Dingle, Co Kerry, remains closed due to snow and ice.

The local road from Rathmore to Eadestown in Co Kildare is impassable due to flooding.
