Motorists are being urged to drive with care, with sub-zero temperatures again expected in most areas overnight.

Parts of Cavan, Clare, Galway, Meath, Roscommon, Tipperary, Wexford, and Wicklow are among the worst affected.

There are also reports of black ice on many roads in Longford and Westmeath.

In Laois and Offaly, gardai are advising motorists against any unnecessary journeys.

All secondary and minor roads in the counties are described as treacherous.

A number of secondary routes aacross the country have been closed due to icy conditions, while many more remain untreated.

Motorists in Roscommon are advised to avoid the Ballaghadereen to Castlerea road.

The roads around Boyle and Gorteen are also very icy.

The Wicklow and Sally Gaps remain impassable and roads in the Navan, Athboy and Bective areas in Co Meath should be avoided if possible.

Conditions are described as treacherous around Listowel in Co Kerry, while the Watergrasshill to Glenville Road in Co Cork has been closed.
