Shell Ireland, which is involved in developing the controversial Corrib gasfield, has challenged a district court judge to explain why she has found the company guilty of contempt of court.

At Westport District Court Judge Mary Devins was told Shell was ‘very unhappy with her finding’ and it wanted the case referred to the High Court for clarification.

Shell was found guilty of contempt after Rossport resident Monica Muller said its representatives had breached an earlier order prohibiting them from entering a commonage through which it wants to run a gas pipeline.

Judge Devins adjourned the case to 8 October.
