A 23-year-old man has been charged with the murder of Limerick business man Roy Collins.

James Dillon, an unemployed, single man with no fixed address appeared before the District Court this evening.

Mr Collins, a father-of-two, was shot and fatally injured in the arcade he managed at Roxboro on Thursday last.

There was tight security in Limerick City as Mr Dillon was taken to court and he arrived at the courthouse under heavy escort.

He had been questioned for seven days at Henry Street Station.

Armed detectives took up positions outside as he was led into the courtroom.

During a brief hearing, which lasted less than two minutes, the court was told that Mr Dillon had been charged in Henry Street Station earlier today with the murder of Mr Collins.

Det Garda Paul Madden, who gave evidence of arresting Mr Dillon, said he had made no reply when charged.

Inspector Tom O Brien asked that Mr Dillon be remanded in custody.

There was no objection from his solicitor and Judge Tom O’ Donnell remanded Dillon in custody and ordered that he appear before the court again on Wednesday next.

Two others, who were also being questioned by gardaí in connection with Mr Collins’ death, were released without charge earlier today.

A 19-year-old man had been questioned for seven days at Roxboro Station.

At Meyerstone Station on the other side of the city, a woman in her 20s had been detained since Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the search for the gun used to kill Mr Collins continued today at several locations on the south side of the city.
