Fachta Murphy - Appeals to communities over passing on information

The newly-appointed Garda Commissioner, Fachta Murphy, has appealed to the community to provide gardaí with the information they need to tackle serious crime.

At his first public interview in his new post, Commissioner Murphy said that that the primary focus of the gardaí will be to tackle gun crime and gang related criminals.

He said they will be targeted through special operations and intelligence led policing.

Commissioner Murphy also said he will be bringing in a multi-agency approach to tackling serious crime particularly drug dealing.

He also said that he believed that An Garda Síochána should remain an unarmed police force.

He said uniformed gardaí do not need to carry firearms because there are 3,000 gardaí licensed and trained to carry guns and they will be used to tackle armed criminals.
