Deputy Commissioner Fachtna Murphy has been named by the Government as the new Garda Commissioner.

Mr Murphy will succeed Commissioner Noel Conroy when he retires in November.

A native of Timoleague in Co Cork, Mr Murphy joined An Garda Síochána in 1967.

He has served in Crumlin, Pearse Street, Ballyfermot and Dún Laoghaire in the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Central Detective Unit, Criminal Assets Bureau and Human Resource Management.

Deputy Commissioner Murphy was promoted to the rank of Chief Superintendent in 1996 and appointed to take charge of the Dublin Metropolitan Eastern Division.

He led the Bureau for three years until his promotion to the rank of Assistant Commissioner in December 1999.

Following over three years in Human Resource Management, he was appointed Deputy Commissioner in July 2003.

Deputy Commissioner Murphy has studied policing methods overseas at both the FBI Academy, Quantico, in the US and at the Police College, Bramshill, England.
