An inquest into the death of former Limerick city councillor Michael Kelly has heard that he died from a sudden heart attack and a contributory factor was a gunshot wound to his head.
The former councillor was found in the bedroom of his mother's house in Southill in Limerick with a bullet wound to the head on 14 May 2004. He died a month later.
There was a garda investigation into his death but no one was charged.
At an inquest into his death in Limerick today, State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy said that the deceased man had a history of heart trouble.
She concluded the cause of death was a heart attack, and a contributory factor was the gunshot wound he had had received to his temple.
She said the gunshot was a close contact wound. She could not exclude that it may have been self-inflicted.
The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence.
