Nine men today became the first people to be charged with having mobile phones in prison.
The men appeared before Clover Hill District Court today.
They were Gerard Clarke of 19 Kilcarrig Grenn, Tallaght and Gerard Cully of 72 Casement Grove, Finglas who are both 21 years old; Sean Ward of 485 Balcurris Road, Ballymun and Nevan Stokes of 12 Palmers Close, Palmerstown who are both 22; 25-year-olds Connor Murphy, 48 Edgeworth Lawn, Dublin and Anthony Ward of address unknown; Andrius Ogorodnikas, 11 The Way, Hunters Run, Clonee aged 27; 30-year-old Jonathan Burke of 65 Ashlawn Court in Bray and 35-year-old John Harvey of 12 Old Court Park, Bray.
They were charged with unlawfully possessing the phones under the new Prisons Act 2007.
The ordinary penalty for this offence is up to a year in jail or a maximum fine of €5,000.
All nine cases were remanded for a week.
