The Ulster Defence Association has distanced itself from Michael Stone, the man who attempted a bomb attack on Stormont last week.
Stone's former paramilitary associates claim in a statement that they had no advance warning of his attempted bomb attack.
The UDA has branded Stone a recluse who had become estranged from its membership.
The organisation also rejected reports that it despatched four carloads of UDA men to intercept, arrest or shoot Stone on Friday as he travelled to Stormont.
The convicted loyalist had his early prison release under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement suspended by the Northern Secretary, Peter Hain, last week.
Last Saturday he was remanded in custody charged with a total of five counts of attempted murder as well as possessing explosives with intent to endanger life, possession of an imitation firearm and possession of articles for terrorist purposes.
This included nail bombs, an axe and a garotte.
