Rise in illegal bids to enter Republic from NI

The number of people trying to get into the country illegally through Northern Ireland has increased sharply.

Garda figures show the Immigration Border Control Unit based in Dundalk stopped 579 people up to the end of July, 21% more than in the same period last year.

Only ten of these made asylum applications; the remainder were sent back to the UK or Northern Ireland.
