The Taoiseach has said all further evidence provided by the Stardust victims' families, and anything uncovered by last night’s RTÉ Prime Time programme, will be looked at by the Department of Justice.

48 people were killed in a fire at the nightclub in Artane, north Dublin, 25 years ago.

Speaking in the Dáil, Bertie Ahern added that any advances in science that could help, including using DNA evidence that may involve exhuming some of the bodies of the victims, would be considered.

He said that a decision would then be made on whether a new investigation is needed.

The Labour leader, Pat Rabbitte, suggested the appointment of a senior counsel to look at the evidence, akin to what happened in the Dean Lyons case.
