The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, is to travel to Rome on Thursday for a private audience with Pope Benedict XVI.
The Government says the meeting is significant as the Pope has received relatively few political leaders since he was installed in April.
It is expected that Northern Ireland, developments in the EU and other international issues will be discussed when the Pope receives Mr Ahern.
