A 36-year-old Dublin man has been jailed for ten years for the manslaughter of a man who was beaten to death with a pickaxe handle in April 2002.
Terence Keogh, a father of three from Pine Brook in Blanchardstown, admitted killing 29-year-old John Murphy.
The attack on Mr Murphy outside a house at Sheepmore Grove in Blanchardstown lasted around five minutes. During that time, Keogh beat his victim repeatedly about the head.
Just minutes before, a row had broken out between a number of men, including Keogh and the deceased, at a nearby pub.
The Central Criminal Court heard that Keogh went to a car and retrieved a pickaxe handle and then chased Mr Murphy and cornered him, and subjected him to the attack.
Detective Sergeant Liam Kelly told the court that Keogh has 36 previous convictions.
Mr Justice Paul Carney said there had been some provocation in this case, but that Keogh's response was wholly disproportionate.
As he was led away, Keogh shouted at the deceased's family as he was restrained by prison officers.
