Derry O'Rourke - New abuse sentence

Former swimming coach Derry O'Rourke may not serve any extra time in jail despite a ten-year sentence today for sexually abusing a secondary school student.

57-year-old O'Rourke, from Edenderry in Co Offaly, is already serving 12 years in jail for other abuse offences.

The latest sentence will run concurrently with that and was backdated to the year 2000 by the Central Criminal Court.

It means he is still due to be released in two years' time.

O'Rourke was sentenced today for two counts of rape and four indecent assaults against a girl at a west Dublin boarding school.

The victim was aged between 14 and 17 when the abuse occurred between 1975 and 1978.
