Driving charges against Fine Gael MEP Avril Doyle were dismissed at Dublin's District Court today because of the State's delay in taking the case.

The MEP was in court to answer three charges relating to her driving during a road traffic incident in Dublin in 2002.

The charges were careless driving, driving without reasonable consideration, and dangerous driving.

But the case was dismissed after just half an hour when it emerged that the initial summons had not been served.

Ms Doyle was in the witness box for just minutes to say that she had had no knowledge at all of the original summons.
