Paper fined €20,000 for trial coverage

The Star on Sunday newspaper has been fined €20,000 for its coverage of the Brian Murphy manslaughter trial, which was judged to be in contempt of court.

The Irish Examiner was fined €1,000 and a UCD student newsaper, The College Tribune, was fined €250.

Judge Michael White said in the Circuit Criminal Court that the article in the Star on Sunday, which referred to two of the accused being on free legal aid, had occurred after the media had been warned about coverage of the trial.

The case arose from the killing of Brian Murphy outside the Club Anabel disco at the Burlington Hotel in Dublin.

The judge said he accepted that reporting by the other two papers of legal arguments presented in the absence of the jury had been an accident which had been apologised for.
