The pop singer Michael Jackson has appeared in court in California to learn the details of charges he faces.

The singer faced 28 individual charges, including ten of lewd and lascivious behaviour, as well as charges of child abduction, false imprisonment and extortion. The pop star has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Santa Barbara County Superior Court Judge Rodney Melville told lawyers that he would release only portions of the indictment to the public, while the lawyers were shown the full indictment.

This is the first time the grand jury indictment had been made public in any way.

The singer was indicted in secret last week by a grand jury which decided there was enough evidence to force the singer to face a trial.

Fans gathered outside the court after holding a candlelight vigil at Mr Jackson's Neverland ranch yesterday.
