Man arrested in McDermott murder case

A 46-year-old man has been arrested by police in the North investigating the murder of a schoolboy in Belfast 30 years ago.

Ten-year-old Brian McDermott was last seen at a playground in the Ormeau Park area of south Belfast on Sunday 2 September 1973.

One week later his mutilated torso and arm were discovered in the River Lagan close to the Belfast Boat Club.

Last year, on the 30th anniversary of the boy’s disappearance, police made a fresh appeal for information in connection with his death.
