Fresh bid to solve NI child murder

Police have launched a fresh attempt to trace those responsible for Northern Ireland's most gruesome child murder.

Detectives have appealed for fresh information about the death of 10-year-old Brian McDermott, 30 years after his disappearance and murder.

Brian disappeared from a playground at Ormeau Park in south Belfast on Sunday, 2 September 1973. His mutilated torso and arm were recovered from the River Lagan almost a week later, near a boat club.

PSNI Detective Chief Inspector George Hamilton said police were hopeful someone could eventually be caught. He said no one had ever been brought to justice for the murder of the boy.

DCI Hamilton said he realised it was difficult to jog memories about an incident that happened 30 years ago.

However, the case has never been closed and he is hopeful that someone might be able to provide some snippet of information, which might open a new line of enquiry, or add a new dimension to information already available.

He said it was also possible that someone who did not volunteer information at the time could now be prepared to contact the confidential Crimestoppers line anonymously or contact detectives at Strandtown on 048 9065 0222.
