He died of pneumonia at his home in California last night with his family by his side.

Born in England but raised in the US from the age of three, Hope's career included successful stints in vaudeville, radio, stage, movies and television.

He also spent time as an amateur boxer and a dancer.

Famed for his one-liners and masterful comic timing, Hope was also responsible – alongside Bing Crosby - for introducing the 'buddy movie' to audiences.

President George W Bush has led the tributes to Bob Hope, saying America had a lost a great citizen who made us laugh and lifted our spirits.
