Bob Hope celebrates 100th birthday

The veteran entertainer, Bob Hope, celebrates his 100th birthday today.

After a 75-year showbusiness career on stage, radio, film and television, he is being honoured across the United States.

In Los Angeles, a fleet of Second World War vintage planes will take part in a fly-over as the historic intersection of Hollywood and Vine is re-christened Bob Hope Square.

Mr Hope, who has not been seen in public for three years, is expected to attend a small party at home for former colleagues, his wife of 69 years, Dolores, their four children and four grandchildren. He did not attend an early party thrown in his neighbourhood.

His daughter Linda said that he and the family were quite overwhelmed by the attention paid to the milestone. 'It's just been extraordinary,' she said.
