A 70-year-old Irish Franciscan priest, Fr Manus Campbell, was murdered early yesterday morning after disturbing intruders at his home in South Africa.
Fr Campbell, who was from Belfast, was alone in his parochial house in a suburb north of Durban when he was attacked.
A spokesman for his order said people departing from a parish function became suspicious after seeing a car leaving the priest's house with its lights switched off.
When they entered the house they found Fr Campbell's body. He had been bound and gagged and had suffered a severe blow to the head.
Fr Campbell had worked in various parishes with the Irish Franciscan mission in the country over the past four decades.
