An American reporter who was deported from Zimbabwe last night has said the manner of his expulsion was aimed at intimidating other journalists working in the country.
Andrew Meldrum, who was a correspondent for Britain's Guardian newspaper, had lived in Zimbabwe for 23 years and was one of only a few foreign reporters left there.
He was arrested by officials of President Robert Mugabe's government in the capital, Harare, yesterday.
After being held for ten hours he was forced onto a plane leaving for London, in spite of having won a High Court order barring his expulsion.
After arriving in Britain, he described what had happened as an abduction.
