Woman gets 2 years for Crowley abduction

A woman has been sentenced for her part in the abduction of four-year-old Deirdre Crowley.

Regina Nelligan, aged 33 and formerly of Fermoy, has been sentenced to two years in prison with the last six months suspended for the abduction.

Deirdre and her father Christopher were found shot dead in a house in Clonmel in August 2001 after Gardaí had arrived to talk to Mr Crowley.

Nelligan had pleaded guilty at Clonmel Circuit Court to helping abduct Deirdre from her mother, Christine O'Sullivan, between December 1999 and August 2001.

Sentencing, Judge Michael O'Shea said it was an extraordinarily tragic case but an extremely serious charge and that a custodial sentence was appropriate.

The court had been told this morning by counsel for the defence that Christopher Crowley had spun a web of lies and deceit to Regina Nelligan about his former partner, Christine O'Sullivan.

The court was told that Ms Nelligan has expressed sincere remorse and is still in a very fragile and tender state.
