Minister announces inquiry into Fr Fortune affair

The Minister for Health, Micheal Martin, said tonight that there will be an inquiry into the Fr Fortune affair.

His announcement followed a meeting with victims of the late Fr Seán Fortune, in Wexford. Mr Martin said he had asked Senior Counsel George Bermingham to advise within three months what form the inquiry could best take.

The Minister earlier said there are four or five options at present, adding that if the institutions involved say they will comply and assist an inquiry, this would help determine what sort of inquiry could be established.

He said he will be listening to the victims' views and discussing with them various options regarding a possible inquiry.

He said the format and scope of any inquiry must be discussed and that he would like to see the truth emerge.
