Detective says Gilligan trial witness became addicted to

A detective inspector involved in the investigation into the murder of Veronica Guerin has told a court that the protected witness became addicted to a lifestyle that could only be supported by drug dealing. Detective Inspector John O'Mahony told the Special Criminal Court that Charles Bowden originally told lies to the Gardaí until he began drip feeding them the truth.

Mr Bowden is one of five protected witnesses due to give evidence against John Gilligan who is accused of murdering Veronica Guerin and importing drugs and firearms. The Special Criminal Court was also told that while Mr Bowden's money was investigated by the Criminal Assets Bureau, he himself was never interviewed by CAB.
