Garda Commissioner confident Omagh bombers will be brough

The Garda Commissioner has said that he is confident that those people involved in the Omagh bombing will be brought before the courts. Speaking at the graduation ceremony at the Garda College at Templemore, Pat Byrne said that he believed that the volunteers, but not the armchair generals, would be prosecuted. Pat Byrne said that Omagh was a long, tedious investigation and that a lot had happened which has not been made public.

However, he said that he did not welcome the BBC's Panorama programme. "It was not helpful to the investigation," he said. On the question of a witness protection programme, the Commissioner said that he would use it to secure prosecutions if witnesses came forward to give evidence.
