Funeral of murdered 22-year-old takes place in Belfast

The funeral of Maria McConnell, who was found dead twelve days after she disappeared last month, has taken place in West Belfast today. On Monday, a 21-year-old man was remanded in custody, charged with her murder. 22-year-old Ms McConnell was last seen leaving a nightclub in the city centre on Saturday July 15, and getting into a taxi. The RUC are still anxious to trace the taxi driver.

Her body was found at a house in the University area, twelve days later, after an anonymous telephone call. It ended one of the largest missing persons investigations in the North. Ms McConnell suffered from depression and was taking medication, and rarely left her home at Coolnasilla Park, where she lived with her parents Frank and Nuala, who also have two sons. Hundreds of people attended requiem Mass at the Church of the Holy Spirit on the Glen Road. Ms McConnell was buried at Milltown cemetery.
