Dublin priest, Father Ivan Payne, who is serving a 2-year sentence for sexually abusing boys had his sentenced increased to six years by the Court of Criminal Appeal. The Director of Public Prosecutions had appealed the leniency of the sentence imposed by the trial judge.
Fr Payne was originally given a six-year sentence - four years of the sentence were suspended. Today the court of Criminal Appeal agreed with the DPP that this sentence was unduly lenient. Payne had pleaded guilty to 13 charges of sexually abusing nine boys between the ages 11 and 14.
