Watch: Strength training at home

Each week on RTÉ LifeStyle, we will have a series of exercise tutorials from the experts at ExWell Medical.

As we get older, our bodies naturally lose a small percentage of muscle mass so the exercises in this video will focus on our strength. Make sure you warm-up beforehand with our warm-up video.

Strength training helps regain that muscle loss and help our cells in our bodies to remain younger. These exercises are a great way to improve the overall strength of our muscles which in turn, will take the pressure off of our joints.

This is very important for anyone who suffers with arthritis or other joint pain. If you do not have a set of weights, you can use simple household objects such as bottles of water or tins of beans, for example.

If you find any of the exercises too difficult, take a break and continue when you feel you are able. The most important point to remember when doing these exercises is to never hold your breath.

Keep breathing as you carry out the exercises and try your best to complete the circuit 2-3 times.
