Each week on RTÉ LifeStyle, we will have a series of exercise tutorials from the experts at ExWell Medical.
Today, in the video above, we are demonstrating a simple warm-up that is suitable for all abilities. The goal is to gradually move each joint and muscle to warm up the body and prepare it for exercise.
These movements can be completed as an exercise by themselves or else should be done before completing any other work out. Gradually warming up the body is important in order to safely increase the heart rate, body temperature, and breathing rate.

About the team
ExWell Medical is a not-for-profit company that offers exercise programmes to people with many different long term illnesses. Our rationale is that a large proportion of the disability and unwellness that comes with any long term illness is caused by becoming deconditioned. At ExWell, we can improve this with appropriate exercise thereby greatly enhancing a person's quality of life.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, we suggest you try to do a little more activity, every day, to improve your physical preparation in case you are infected with the coronavirus and are unlucky enough to be more severely affected.
This advice is particularly important to those that are at risk due to age or a chronic illness. Being physically active will firstly help to prevent any physical deterioration due to isolation, and secondly, to optimize cardio-respiratory fitness to reduce the risk of complications.
