The 2017 season of Celebrity Operation Transformation kicked off tonight and here are our top 5 highlights from the first episode from weigh-ins, spanx-gate and aubergine alerts!

There were so many highlights to choose from between James Patrice bringing his own food to Electric Picnic to avoid temptation - serious commitment, Mary Byrne facing one of the biggest fears of her life as you'll read below but we've chosen the Top 5 for you.

1. Chef Gary O'Hanlon is the biggest Loser/Winner
We cannot talk about the programme without talking about Gary O'Hanlon's weight loss...he was one of three celebrities to lose half a stone or more this week. Pretty amazing.

After being told by Dietician Aoife Hearne that his "food diary was the most shocking of all of our leaders, fizzy drinks, red bull, ice cream, cookies, jellies...", he went on to show how seriously he is taking this opportunity and lost...eight and a half pounds.

Yes, this is not a typo. Eight and a half pounds in one week and our favourite part? He did it by "...eating more than I’ve ever eaten in my entire life in a week and that’s the truth.

"No sweets, no fizzy drinks, no alcohol what so ever so I went cold turkey on all the bad stuff and ate all the good stuff and obviously threw in a decent bit of exercise as well.

He added: "...everyone has been saying that, my wife has been saying that to me for years; it’s all about food, you can exercise all you want but if your diet is all wrong, it’s pointless."

Maybe his wife was on to something when she advised him in this clip!

2. Spanx-Gate
After finding out that Triona beat her three pound weight loss target by half a pound, Karl was the first expert to comment. After congratulating her, he then highlighted the fact that measurement was a big part of the Operation Transformation journey. He also said: "This morning I measured everyone's waistline, with your own, I couldn't really measure it, because I think you had either spanx or body shaping underwear on underneath the lycra.

Triona tried to laugh it off: "You want to see my knickers, is that what you're trying to say?"

Karl was not giggling however: "Well...actually I want to see your waistline. It's crucial when you come on the show to very much be, warts 'n all, in terms of fitness level, in terms of weight and in terms of waistline.

He added: "I think that's something we need to address, you're here as a leader."

Again Triona tried a joke: "...to undress."

Karl responded with: "The joking for me...you're detracting from the issue which is you're asked to do something, you didn't do it, you're here for a reason. If I tell you to do something, you need to do it, you didn't.

"That's just not good enough for people who follow the plan, for you, for the rest of your leaders.

And there was more: "You know what you're wasting the opportunity for yourself. It's pretty simple."

Ouch. That should definitely be motivating for Triona to ditch the spanx for next week. She may need to take a leaf out of James' book and just go for it!

3. What's an aubergine?!
After her serious fitness test - you know the one, with the running machine and the tubes - poor singer Kayleigh Cullinan was also delivered some cold hard facts from the experts: "For a 21-year-old, I am extremely concerned.

"Your BMI ranks you as Class 3 obese and that's as high as you can get and almost 45% of your body is fat."

She realised pretty quickly that she needs to be on the programme and sets up to shop for the items on her list in order to plan ahead for a healthy week.

However pretty soon, the shopping became "too much", as she stared at the list confused: "What's an aubgerine? This is ridiculous!"

She then added, looking in at the fruit and vegetable packed result: "My shopping trolley has never looked like this, ever."

Well maybe, just saying like, in a super nice way, maybe that was part of the problem? Still, she's here now and hasn't it already started to pay off? See Kayleigh's weight loss below.

4. Mary Byrne facing her biggest fear and nailing it
If you've forgotten why you love The X Factor's Mary Byrne, you'll remember the second you see her kitted out and ready to face her biggest fear...neights. So what do the Celeb IT peeps get her to do?

Abseil down a building of course!

 Not gonna lie, tears threatening here a wee bit. Isn't she a true rockstar, definitely has The X Factor, our Mary.

  • Mary Byrne:

Starting Weight: 17 st 13 lbs / 114 kg

Current Weight: 17 st 8.5 lbs / 112 kg

Loss: 4.5 lbs / 2 kg

Target for next week: 2 lbs / 0.9 kg

 

  • James Patrice:

Starting Weight: 19 st 0.5 lbs / 121 kg

Current Weight: 18 st 7 lbs / 117.6 kg 

Loss: 7.5 lbs / 3.4 kg

Target for next week: 3 lbs / 1.4 kg

 

  • Gary O'Hanlon:

Starting Weight: 15 st 3.5 lbs / 96.8 kg

Current Weight: 14 st 9 lbs / 92.9 kg

Loss: 8.5 lbs / 3.9 kg

Target for next week: 3 lbs / 1.4 kg
 

  • Triona McCarthy:

Starting Weight: 12 st 9.5 lbs / 80.6 kg

Current Weight: 12 st 6 lbs / 79 kg

Loss: 3.5 lbs / 1.6 kg

Target for next week: 2 lbs / 0.9 k
 

  • Kayleigh:

Starting Weight: 20 st 11.5 lbs / 132.2 kg

Current Weight: 20 st 4.5 lbs / 129 kg

Loss: 7 lbs / 3.2 kg

Target for next week: 3 lbs / 1.4 kg
