Writer-director Kenneth Branagh's Belfast won Best Screenplay at the Golden Globes in the US on Sunday night, but there was disappointment for the film's acting nominees, Caitríona Balfe, Jamie Dornan and Ciarán Hinds, and Passing star Ruth Negga.
Against a backdrop of controversy about the diversity of Golden Globes organiser the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) and surging Covid-19 cases, this year's awards took place behind closed doors, with no stars present in Beverly Hills and no television broadcast.
Branagh's semi-autobiographical Belfast and western drama The Power of the Dog had led the film nominations with seven each.

In the end, Belfast's Best Screenplay award was its only win while The Power of the Dog was named Best Drama and also took the prizes for Best Director (Jane Campion) and Best Supporting Actor (Kodi Smit-McPhee). Belfast stars Jamie Dornan and Ciarán Hinds had also been among the Best Supporting Actor nominees.
Their Belfast co-star Balfe and Passing star Negga had both been shortlisted for Best Supporting Actress but lost out to West Side Story's Ariana DeBose. Steven Spielberg's remake of the iconic musical also won Best Picture, Musical or Comedy and Best Actress, Musical or Comedy (Rachel Zegler).
Van Morrison, a Best Song nominee for Down to Joy from Belfast, lost out to Billie Eilish's No Time to Die from the Bond movie of the same name.
Nicole Kidman was named Best Actress for her portrayal of comedy legend Lucille Ball in Being the Ricardos while Will Smith was named Best Actor for his portrayal of Richard Williams, the father of Venus and Serena Williams, in King Richard.
In the television categories, Succession was the big winner, taking home Best Drama, Best Actor for Jeremy Strong and Best Supporting Actress for co-star Sarah Snook.

The HFPA received heavy criticism last year after it emerged that it had no Black members, prompting the association to overhaul its bylaws and implement changes addressing ethics and inclusion.
The HFPA's ethics were also called into question over its alleged practices, including accepting inappropriate 'freebies', following an investigation by the Los Angeles Times.
During Sunday's event, Neil Phillips, the HFPA's chief of diversity, was quoted as saying the event was in a "necessary phase of progress".
Despite the controversies, the event did see history made, with Michaela Jae Rodriguez, star of the series Pose, becoming the first transgender actress to win a Golden Globe.
Belfast opens in Irish cinemas on Friday, 21 January. The Power of the Dog and Passing are available now on Netflix.
