Caroline Flack has penned an emotional Instagram message saying she is going through "the worst time of my life".

The Love Island presenter Caroline Flack is due in court today (Monday) after being charged with assault earlier this month.

Ms Flack was arrested and charged with assault by beating on December 13 following a private domestic incident reportedly involving her boyfriend Lewis Burton.

She is expected to appear on bail at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court.

The 40-year-old shared the post on Sunday, days after stepping down as the host of Love Island after being charged following a private domestic incident involving a man.

Taking to the social networking service, Flack wrote:  "This is the worst time of my life.

"I don't kno where to go to. Where to look. Who to trust.

"Or who I even am."

Flack was arrested in Islington, north London, on December 12 following reports of a man being assaulted. Police did not name the man, but they said he was not seriously injured.

Last week the presenter stood down from the upcoming winter series of the ITV2 reality show and Laura Whitmore will replace her.

Whitmore said in a statement: "To say I'm excited to be heading to Cape Town to host Love Island, the biggest show on television, is an understatement.

"I want to thank ITV for trusting me at the helm of this huge show. I wish it was in better circumstances; Caroline is a brilliant host and also a friend. We've spoken a lot in the last few days since she stepped down.

"She has been very kind to me and strongly pushed me for this role. I've watched her host every series and know I have big boots to fill. I will try and do it justice."

Caroline Flack has now reacted to the news that Whitmore will be taking over as Love Island host when it returns in 2020, saying she is "glad" but admitting that "it's a really rough time."

Taking to her Instagram Story, she wrote: "I'm glad it's Laura. She loves the show as much as I do.

"Thank you for your continuous messages of support... it's a really rough time... but I'm doing all I can to keep my head above water and sort this all out..."

Flack will appear on bail at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court on December 23.
